Wingspan is the amazing debut effort by Elizabeth Hargrave. Players are bird enthusiasts seeking to discover and attract the best birds to the habitats in their wildlife preserves.
On your turn, you may:
- Play a bird to a habitat, paying the cost in food and possibly eggs;
- Gain food tokens via custom dice in a dice tower that looks like a birdfeeder;
- Lay eggs on birds already in your habitats;
- Draw from hundreds of unique cards all with incredible artwork.
The game is played over four rounds. Each round has a public objective, allowing players to compete for extra points. Likewise, players start the game with private bonus objectives, and may obtain more during the course of play. At the end of the game the player with the most points wins!
Wingspan is a very successful game, having won 16 awards internationally including the 2019 Kennerspiel des Jahres – the German connoisseur/expert game of the year. The beautifully illustrated cards and serene habitats depicted on the player mats put players at ease.
In this episode David, Megan, and Todd fly the coop and talk about the game, birding, and “light falconry.” Will Wingspan make ornithologists out of us? Listen to the episode and find out!
