Android: Netrunner is a two-player asymmetric card game set in a dystopian cyberpunk world. One player takes on the role of a powerful corporation aiming to advance secret agendas, while the other plays as a hacker, or “runner,” seeking to thwart the corporation’s plans. Each side offers unique gameplay mechanics, creating a dynamic and strategic experience.

At its core, Android: Netrunner revolves around resource management and bluffing. The corporation sets up servers to protect its agendas using “ice,” defensive programs requiring runners to break through with their own tools. Consequently, the runner must balance risks, as some ice can cause severe consequences.

Not only does the game feature deck-building, but it also emphasizes player interaction. The corporation plays with hidden cards, forcing the runner to deduce which servers are worth attacking. Conversely, the corporation must decide whether to fortify their defenses or advance their agendas.

Another key point is the game’s economy, which requires players to manage credits wisely. Both sides need credits to execute strategies, albeit in different ways. For example, runners use them to install programs, while corporations need them to activate their defenses.

Because of its asymmetry, each game unfolds uniquely. Furthermore, Android: Netrunner integrates a rich narrative into its mechanics. The world-building, coupled with strategic depth, has garnered a loyal fan base. All in all, the game’s intricate balance between strategy and risk makes it both engaging and replayable.

In this episode David, Paul, and Todd talk about a long time favorite of ours that literally keeps coming back again and again!
